About The Course
IS455 provides a hands-on introduction to Data Analytics and Machine Learning (ML), with an emphasis on applying techniques such as classification and regression to real-world business problems. Students will learn to work with imperfect data and develop data-driven solutions that align with client expectations. Beyond technical skills, the course also focuses on enhancing teamwork and project management, especially in diverse teams with varying strengths and backgrounds. This course offers a unique blend of technical learning, cultural immersion, and real-world consulting experience. This 18-week course is structured into three key phases:
- Phase 1 (Weeks 1–7): Students attend weekly classes to explore various ML models and learn how to evaluate their effectiveness in solving business challenges.
- Phase 2 (Weeks 8–16): Teams begin applying their knowledge to client-specific problems, preparing deliverables before the overseas trip.
- Phase 3 (Weeks 17–18): Students travel to Bangkok to meet clients in person, receive feedback, and refine their solutions, leading up to the final presentation.
Reflection
Working with real-world data in this project showed me just how much time and effort goes into cleaning data before we can even start the analysis process. There were missing values, inconsistent formats, and sometimes variables that weren’t clearly defined. We had to go back and forth with the client quite a bit, and even then, we often had to make reasonable assumptions based on what we had.
At the beginning, our team struggled to define the scope of the project. It took a while to understand exactly what the client needed and how we could get there with the data we had. But in the end, I think we managed to pull everything together and deliver insights that were actually useful for them. The feedback we got after our final presentation was encouraging. I am also really glad that I got to work with such a supportive team. Everyone pulled their weight, and even when things got stressful, we still found ways to enjoy the process and have fun while we were in Bangkok
Thank You Notes to Benefactors
I want to sincerely thank the generous benefactors whose support made my overseas trip to Bangkok possible. This experience has been truly invaluable in helping me grow professionally and personally. Working on a real-world project, leading a diverse team, and immersing myself in a new culture have given me insights I couldn’t have gained otherwise. I am incredibly grateful for your contribution, which made this learning journey experience in Bangkok a reality.
