About The Course
This course provides an overview of the many concepts, techniques and algorithms in data analytics and machine learning. Students will acquire knowledge on classification and regression models such as support vector machines and linear regression etc. The emphasis in this course will be on the application side of data analytics which includes not only creating the predictive model but also deploying and visualizing the output from the models.
More importantly, this course allows students to apply cross-disciplinary and project management approaches while learning and applying machine learning techniques to help the client Thai company to effectively and efficiently apply data analytics and machine learning to improve their competitiveness and business efficiency. It hones students’ problem-solving skills and prepares them for the complex regional business environment today.
Thailand, as part of ASEAN, is rich in natural resources e.g. gems and precious metals and is considered to be one of the vital exporters of resources globally. Other than the 2 traditional sectors of agriculture and tourism, it is also a prime manufacturing hub for investors in vehicles, electronics and medical equipment. In recent years, Covid-19 has become a key accelerator for digital transformation globally and the Thai government has also been relentlessly encouraging its businesses to adopt digital technologies and the use of data analytics.
Reflection
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on an SMU-X Overseas course to Bangkok, Thailand. Immersed in the vibrant culture of Thailand, I learnt about both the Thai business etiquette and day-to-day customs and traditions. My understanding was further strengthened with the insightful ‘Living and Working in Thailand’ session organized by SMU Overseas Centre Bangkok. Through the sharings, I discovered that Thailand, situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, serves as a strategic location for companies to expand their business regionally, similar to Singapore, well-known as a global business hub. There are also numerous employment opportunities available such as in the Bio, Circular, and Green (BCG) Economy which aligns with the worldwide growing trend for sustainable development. This changed my perspective on the business landscape in ASEAN as one that is flourishing and relatively established. I came to realize that working abroad in the future was a viable possibility.
The main bulk of the trip was spent on refining the data analytics group project with Data Wow, a tech company. Late-night suppers with my group mates while working on the project and spontaneous activities in the day definitely brought us closer together. It surprised me that I was able to develop deep bonds with my group mates with whom I initially had no connection with at the start of the semester in such a short time.
Apart from the project, there were company visits and various activities. Among them, I particularly enjoyed the Muay Thai activity at FitFac Academy. It was my first time participating in Muay Thai and it was surprisingly beginner friendly. The bright colours in the studio and patient instructors totally dispelled my prior impression of Muay Thai being an intimidating activity. It was also intriguing to me that FitFac Academy focuses on providing lessons to women as Muay Thai is commonly perceived to be mostly for men.
Towards the end of the trip, I gathered the courage to explore Bangkok alone for half a day. Visiting the bustling city centre, Siam, with its towering malls and lively streets, and the vibrant Chatuchak Market, teeming with a kaleidoscope of stalls, was one of the unforgettable highlights of my exploration. This wonderful experience gave me a taste of the joys and excitement of solo travel.
This Bangkok trip was a transformative experience filled with self-discovery and personal growth. I will never forget the warmth that I received from the people despite the language barrier and the simple yet delicious Thai national dessert, mango sticky rice.

Thank You Notes to Benefactors
I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the Jakkie Choo – Tradecom SMU-X Overseas Exposure Grant that has made my first trip to Bangkok possible. It was a memorable trip where I forged genuine friendships and broadened my horizons in terms of the application of data analytics in the industry and the rich culture that Thailand has to offer. Despite not planning much for the trip, I got to explore many places and food. Every day was truly an adventure. From this life-changing experience, I am inspired to continue pursuing data analytics as my future career. Once again, I am very grateful for your generosity and I look forward to many new experiences that lie ahead of my SMU journey!
