ABOUT SMU-X MAKERSPACE

Vision and Mission

Vision

To be the essential and holistic space for the SMU students and the greater community to create prototypes and innovative solutions for their school projects and beyond. 

Mission

The SMU-X Makerspace is committed to provide the SMU community with a sanctuary to conduct their hands-on design, experiment, tinkering and prototyping, and simulate their creativity and imagination towards problem-solving, while creating a paradigm shift in their understanding on how prototyping can be a culture and a way of life, and play a part in creating a more sustainable society and environment.

 

PROGRAMMES & WORKSHOPS

The SMU-X Makerspace offers various ad-hoc workshops to educate the SMU community on:

  • Introductory maker courses (such as 3D printing)
  • Equipment-specific training (pre-requisites for using the equipment without supervision)
  • On-demand training on software and IoT (including 3D modelling software)
  • Creative craft workshops (EDMs will be publicised via emails to the SMU community)

FACILITIES & SERVICES

Facilities available include:

  • Various 3D Printers, capable of printing thermoplastics (PLA, PETG) and flexible (TPU)
  • Cutting tools such as the Dremel
  • Laser cutting machine
  • Sewing machine
  • Leather craft tools
  • Hot foil stamping machine
  • Electronics kits such as a soldering iron
  • IoT peripherals (such as Raspberry Pis and Arduinos)

To receive guidance on the use of the equipment, you can schedule an appointment with the Makerspace Student Associates.

The Makerspace Student Associates can also 3D print objects for you. Alternatively, you can do it by yourself on designated printers.
