About The Course
The course focused on gender dynamics, exploring the challenges and strategies involved in managing social differences with a particular emphasis on gender equity in institutions and societies. Through both seminars and an immersive overseas segment, we explored the complexities of gender equality in a nation where traditional roles often clash with modern expectations.
From addressing workforce diversity and gender representation to understanding cultural resistance to change, the course provided a nuanced perspective on navigating these tensions.
The range of activities, from seminars to site visits, provided valuable insights into how large corporations, universities, and individuals are addressing critical issues such as gender representation, workforce challenges, and social change.
Reflection
The SMU-XO course offered me a unique perspective on the world, allowing me to engage directly with corporations and understand how they navigate challenges in today’s dynamic business landscape. This hands-on experience provided fresh insights that I would not have gained through a traditional classroom module, enriching my understanding of real-world practices and challenging me to think differently while appreciating the broader value of learning in my academic journey.
Interactions during the course made me realize the unconscious stereotypes I held about Japan, compelling me to reappraise the complexities of its culture. I learned how Japanese businesses balance tradition and innovation, fostering an environment that values both collective harmony and individual contributions. This stark juxtaposition highlighted the importance of diversity in broadening perspectives and enhancing problem-solving skills while fostering empathy and understanding in our increasingly globalized world.
Navigating unfamiliar situations and overcoming challenges on this journey nurtured my independence and social skills. Simple gestures during cultural exchanges reinforced the idea that inclusivity can emerge from personal interactions that celebrate diverse identities. Visiting organizations like Japan Airlines and Bloomberg illustrated the imperative role of leadership in promoting DEI initiatives, fueling my desire to contribute to fostering inclusivity in my future endeavors.
These experiences have profoundly shaped my educational journey and strengthened my commitment to being an adaptable and culturally aware individual, prepared to thrive in any environment. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be part of this course and to be able to experience it for myself. Arigato, Japan!
