RESILIENCE
Resilience is about embracing uncertainties and unprecedented events, and not admitting defeat during such difficult situations. It is also about responding to setbacks with a tenacious mindset -- to persevere even when things do not go as planned. Positivity is having the mindset of optimism and to be in a state of being happy. This attitude envisions and expects good and favourable outcomes, focusing on success and wins, rather than failure and negativity.
Dealing with real-world issues in SMU-X courses is never easy. With high ambiguity and variability, there is less control of SMU-X projects. Things may not go as planned and the unexpected can happen – this is the real world. Students will learn to embrace uncertainty and be adaptable to change. With a positive mindset and guidance from the faculty, they will seek and assess alternatives, modify current solutions or formulate new ones and fulfil their project deliverables. SMU-X also provides students with a safe environment to fail and it’s ok to fail. What matters most are the lessons learnt from such failures and the ability to respond positively to the setbacks.
Why is this important?
Resilience provides an individual a coping mechanism for devastating experiences that may be too overpowering to process. It helps build up tenacity and the mental mindset to overcome the challenging times.
Tips on how we can cultivate these knowledge and skills
- Learn from your own (and others) setbacks and think about how you can do better and improve. Never give up!
- Focus on the good and positive things and be grateful
- Reframe (and reset) the mindset by looking at alternatives to solve challenges encountered. Adopt a positive and open mindset when considering each alternative
