Dear SMU Faculty and Staff
I am delighted to let you know that Professor Arnoud De Meyer, who has served as President of SMU over the last four years since September 2010, has agreed to extend his term as President until 31 December 2018.
Under Arnoud’s watch, SMU has continued to deliver a transformative education to produce well-rounded graduates. The continued success of our graduates in finding meaningful careers and remuneration is well reflected in the yearly graduate employment survey. It is testament of a promise that we uphold proudly. SMU’s postgraduate professional programmes have also seen encouraging growth. In addition, Arnoud has created a dynamic research culture at SMU that emphasises inter-disciplinary research needed to solve the world's complexities.
He has also paved the way to internationalise the institution's brand and enhance its reputation with significant inroads made in China, India and Europe.
His stewardship that resulted in the ground-breaking of our new School of Law Building and the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library, set to complete by 2017, is another important achievement. In our Vision 2025, we envisaged for SMU to evolve into a more comprehensive university, rooted in the social and natural sciences as well as in the humanities. It will have an integrated curriculum that includes components linking academic and personal development, and community engagement. A 24/7 facility, currently known as SMU-X, will provide flexible new space for “project-based learning, leading and living”, giving groups of students the opportunity to spend a few weeks to a few months to live together, incubate their ideas and bring them to fruition. All SMU students will get to spend some time in SMU-X, which will be ready in the next five years. SMU’s next growth phase will also include a stimulating environment to promote world-class research and research-based teaching that will make an impact on education, business and society.
I know that Arnoud is excited about leading and implementing Vision 2025.
Please join me in congratulating Arnoud on his new appointment.
